Анотація: Physiology is an ever changing science. This new edition of "Textbook of Physiology" (two volumes) contains more than 1000 study questions, about 2000 MCQs and above 700 figures. It focuses on the basic principles of physiology needed to begin a career in the health care profession. It should also be useful to both undergraduate and post graduate students who wish to review the basic principles needed for understanding the pathophysiology of human diseases. Salient features of this new edition of textbook are: 1. The entire text has been thoroughly updated and many new diagrams added for better understanding and reproducibility. 2. The text has been so presented that the students would find it easy to attempt any question in the form of objective or subjective type, multiple choice or essay type after going through the text. 3. A rapid preview has been presented at the beginning of each chapter to help the readers to have a bird's eye view of the chapter content. 4. Highlighting of important terms has been done by using italics, bold letters or pin-pointing important notes in boxes. 5. Study questions at the end of each chapter modified as per guidelines issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI). 6. Many more Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) have been included at the end of each chapter. This would not only help in various competitive examinations but will also facilitate self assessment and quick review. 7. Many clinical pictures have been incorporated for better understanding of clinical concepts. 8. Photographs of eminent scientists who contributed to modern physiology incorporated. The budding workers may get inspiration from them. 9. A detailed index has been meticulously prepared to search out any text content easily. 10- Abnormalities of ovarian functions - ovarian cycle --—-—----- 11- Menopause ———————————————————-———————— 12- Contraception —————————————————————————————- 13-Fertilization - implantation ————————————————— 14- Placenta ———————————————————————————————— 15- Parturition (labour) ————————————————————— 16- Lactation ————————————————————————— Sensory nervous system 1- Introduction - organization of the nervous system ——————- 2- Synapse - synaptic transmission - Mechanism of synaptic transmission —————————— Synaptic potentials (postsynaptic - presynaptic) ———— Characters of synaptic transmission ——————————————-Factors affecting synaptic transmission ————————————- 3- Chemical transmitters ------————————————————— 4- Neuronal pool——————————————————————————— 5- The sensory system —————————————————————— Receptors (types - properties)—————————————— Somatic sensory afferents ————————————— Somatic sensations ———————————————————— Tactile sensations ——————————————————— Thermal sensation ——————————————————————— Pain sensation Cutaneous - deep - visceral - referred - neuropathic pain — Pathways of pain sensation ————————————— - Pain control ——————————————————————— 6- Sensations from head & neck (headache) ———————————— 7- Sensory pathways ———————————————————————————- 8- Sensory code ————————————————————————— 9- Sensory cortex (somatic sensory areas) ——————————————- 10- Sensory lesions ———————————————————————— SpeciaCsenses Vision 1- Physiologic anatomy of the eye - Physiological optics ————— 2- Protective mechanisms of the eye -—————————————— 3- The aqueous humour - Intraocular pressure - Glaucoma————- 4-The cornea ——————-——————————-—————————————- 5- The lens (Cataract - Accommodation - Near response)————— 6- Errors of refraction ——————-——-—————————————————- 7- The iris —————————————————————————— 8- Light reflex - causes of meiosis & Mydriasis -————————— 9- The retina - rods & cones ——-——————————————— 10- Duplicity theory of vision ——-———————-———————————— 11- Spectral sensitivity of photopigments ——————-—————— 12- Photoreceptor potentials & signal transmission in the retina — 13- Automatic regulation of retina!
