Анотація: PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDITIONSINCE the publication of the fourth edition the advancement made in the science of dental metallurgy has been very considerable. Consequently the task of revision has involved completely re-writing the major portion of the book. The new material applies more particularly to the dental golds, the amalgams, tie introduction of stainless steels, and the new metals chromium and tantalum. Inevitably, some of the older part has had to be discarded : in particular, the matter relating to mechanical appliances has been omitted as this is more appropriately dealt with in books on Dental Mechanics. Also the notes on the metallic ores and the extraction of the metals from them were felt to be out of place.The chapters have been re-arranged to obtain better sequence, and a list of references placed at the end of the book for simplicity.The first edition was written at the request of a deputation of dental students, in London, and was based largely on the syllabus of Dental Metallurgy of the Royal College of Surgeons.The syllabus has once again been consulted, and in order, to conform with the present regulations (relating to the licence in dental surgery), in addition to the changes outlined above, a short chapter on non-metallic denture bases has been added, although this does not come strictly within the scope of dental metallurgy. Apart from meeting examination requirements, however, the object of the book is also to enable those engaged in dentistry to keep in touch with the dental progress made by research workers, and so help them to apply in dental practice, knowledge only recently gained in the laboratory.It is hoped that this new edition, so completely revised, will meet with the same cordial reception as previous editions.The author is very grateful to all those who have so willingly supplied new information and helpful criticism : also to Alan E. W. Smith, B.Sc., Ph.D., for his assistance both with the manuscript and with the proofs.
